When we are young we can easily focus from distance to near and back to distance again. This does not require any special glasses. As we get older this focusing becomes more difficult. Around the age of 45 we need help with focusing objects at near. Special glasses are needed and these are called bifocals, multifocals or reading glasses. The reason for our focusing problem is that the lens in our eye can no longer change shape as it did when we were young. Presbyopia gets worse as we get older.
